Japanese anthropologists came to Taiwan and conducted field studies in many indigenous villages. As a result, different tribes throughout Taiwan were categorized and named in the resulting records of indigenous culture. These anthropological records were an important reference for the Office of the Governor-General when devising policies for this group, and especially when finding ways to exert more control over their communities.
