Due to their frequent contact with Han Chinese society, many of the plain indigenous people(Pingpu) were gradually influenced by the foreign culture in terms of beliefs, customs, and ways of life. The Qing Dynasty also created the “sheshuei” (village teachers) system to introduce Han Chinese culture to the indigenous people, while the Western missionaries arriving during mid-19th century, after many Taiwanese ports had opened for external trade, introduced Christianity and other aspects of Western culture.
