As soon as the nationalist government took over Taiwan, it vigorously promoted Chinese culture and Mandarin Chinese. In 1966 (Year 55 of the ROC calendar), the Cultural Revolution broke out in mainland China, while the Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement was launched in Taiwan with the creation of the “Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement Promotion Committee”, which aimed at improving educational standards, popularizing the use of Mandarin Chinese, promoting Confucian principles and traditions, and expanding the use of Chinese classical literature.In addition, Chinese cultural teaching materials were introduced to schools, inspired by the Four Books and the Five Classics.
