In 1966 (Year 55 of the ROC calendar), the government established the first export processing zone in Kaohsiung, where low paid, hard-working Taiwanese laborers with basic education were able to manufacture high quality products that were very popular abroad, thus making the term “Made in Taiwan” famous. With the establishment of Hsinchu Science Park in the 1980s, Taiwan became a high-tech manufacturing nation. In the knowledge-driven 21st century, product R&D and brand value have become the keys to profitability, and Taiwan was thus faced with the critical decision of whether to upgrade from its focus on OEM to develop its own proprietary brands.
