The Qing Dynasty categorized the indigenous people s as “civilized” or “uncivilized” according to various criteria, including their living spaces and whether they paid taxes, performed assigned labors and accepted Han Chinese civilization. Among the indigenous population in Taiwan, the plain indigenous peoples(Pingpu) who frequently interacted with the Han Chinese were usually included into the “civilized” group. In Taiwanese literature from the Qing Dynasty, the plain indigenous peoples were often described as selling or leasing their land unwillingly to the Han Chinese. Without a permanent hunting ground, territory or village, some of the tribes people chose to move to other places, while others stayed to confront the challenges that they faced.
