Map:Modern Education and Culture
The Office of the Governor-General attempted to cultivate talented people who could serve the colonial authorities through the use of modern education, which in turn opened a window to the world for intellectuals in Taiwan. Attracted by the benefits of receiving logical, scientific knowledge, many Taiwanese people absorbed certain aspects of Western civilization, thus aiding the island's modernization . This process produced new forms of popular culture and changed lifestyles, especially in the cities.
