Changbin Culture Site
Baxian Cave site in Changbin Township, Taitung County belongs to the late Paleolithic Period , and is the earliest prehistoric site unearthed in Taiwan. Archaeologists have excavated items from some 5,000~20,000 years ago, including hacking tools, chipped stone tools, bone needles, bone lance points and bone fish hooks. Fireplaces and fish bones were also discovered, and although no human remains have been found, it can still be speculated that people at the time were already taking shelter in caves to guard against the elements. They produced various tools and utensils, and gathered food through fishing and hunting. They also knew how to start fires.
