Taiwan was the destination for migrants from various regions. They spoke different languages and held a variety of religious beliefs. These groups did not always cooperate; disputes or even armed conflict sometimes erupted. There were clashes between indigenous people and Han Chinese, between Han Chinese and the Qing government, and even among various groups within the Han population. Conflict often resulted from competition for resources, profit, or power. After conflicts, the government often adjusted its policies, and the losers’ power was diminished, but each event triggered further evolution within Taiwan’s local communities.
