Tiyamacan

In answering the question “How did we come to be on this island?”, we may begin with tribal legends about the origin of Austronesian peoples on Taiwan and consider their distinctive perspectives. After all, ancestral stories are a time-honored way for preserving and conveying history across generations. This piece was inspired by the Amis legend of Tiyamacan, a young woman who glowed with an inner light. Her beauty had attracted the amorous attention of the son of the sea god, who sent a giant wave to carry her to the depths of the sea. Tiyamacan was transformed into a myriad of new, earthly manifestations such as thunder and rainbows as well as a multitude of life forms. In this story, light reflects both the pure intentions of Tiyamacan as well as life, waiting eagerly to emerge from the chaos of the primordial universe.
