Chen Sung-po (1909 – 2002) – Dentist with a keen eye for photography records local history for posterity. After graduating from the School of Dentistry at Tokyo’s Nihon University, Chen Sung-po opened dentistry clinics in Tainan City and Shanhua, where he continued practicing dentistry until he was well into his eighties. An avid photographer, Sung-po’s long photographic career stretches back to the prewar (pre-1945) Japanese era. He was particularly fond of photographing people, sitters including his wife, children, neighbors, and patients. His volumes of photographs are meticulously labelled with information on subjects, locations, dates, cameras used, film brands and models, and even details on f-stop and exposure time. His photographs, capturing the flavors and experiences of everyday life, are of particular historical interest.
