Settlements in the Hills

Central and northern Taiwan are characterized by rugged terrain. Because the soil is not fertile enough for large-scale farming, reservoirs were often built to divert water for irrigation. This, along with lots of animal manure, enhanced soil fertility. Consequently, farmers became closely connected to their land, and residential houses were dispersed throughout settlements scattered across the farmlands.
